Chambers Haupt Table

Satinwood small centre table designed by Sir William Chambers (1723-1796) and made by Georg Haupt (1741-1784), the top inlaid with specimen marbles. Dated 1769.

This remarkable table has a detailed inscription on the underside, recording the design by Chambers and manufacture by Haupt, thus providing a fascinating link between these two major figures. The inscription reads as follows :-
‘Cette Table à été Comandée & Dessinée / par Monsr Chambers Premier Architect / de sa Majesté Britannique / & Executée par son / Très humble Serviteur / George Haupt / Suédois / London le 4 de Fevrier / 1769’. (This table has been commissioned and designed by Mr Chambers Chief Architect of His Britannic Majesty and executed by his most humble servant George Haupt, Swedish. London the 4th of February 1769’.)
