During 'Asian Art in London' week, we hosted an exhibition of works from Blitz Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, who are based in Amsterdam and who, like us, exhibit at The European Fine Arts Fair in Maastricht.
Dries and Diana Blitz showed a selection of some of their finest Chinese ceramics and Works of Art, predominantly from early periods (Neolithic - Yuan, circa 4500 BCE to 14th century CE).
The exhibition included some early White wares as well as some superb pieces from the Xing kilns (North East China), a strong group of Black wares (Tang to Yuan) and several fine Celadon pieces of the same date. There was also be a selection of Tang sancai wares (8th Century) and some outstanding ceramics from earlier periods (Neolithic - Han).
Works of Art include a lovely Tang ritual bronze bucket and a superb gilt-bronze 14th Century Guanyin figure. Among the few non-Chinese pieces is a very striking Japanese wood sculpture of a seated Buddhist Monk, probably representing Kukai (Kobo-daishi) and dating from the 16 or 17th century (illustrated in the ‘Asian Art in London’ website).
To coincide with the Blitz exhibition, Harriet Impey and Katie Pickwoad will be selling their beautiful book, A Bowlful of Happiness, suitable for children from 5 up and which introduces them to the world of Chinese ceramics.
